CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

After a brief search in the attic, Ainsley found the pocket watch and the bow and arrow. They reviewed a series of intro-to-archery videos on Tobin’s laptop, then Ainsley practiced shooting at a few stuffed animals Tobin had set up around the attic. She pegged a tattered elephant right in his trunk. Though she’d actually been aiming for his ear, she thought it was pretty good for a beginner.

For extra courage, she put on one of her Greyhallow T-shirts––the one with Zander swinging his staff at an attacking gargoyle. She slipped the watch into her pocket and hoisted the bow over her shoulders.

In the kitchen, Mom was making chicken salad and Dad was on a ladder changing a light bulb.

“Mind if we go to the festival for a bit?” Ainsley asked, scooting the bow and arrow behind her back as far as possible.

“What’s that?” Mom asked as she scooped celery and grapes into a bowl of rotisserie chicken.

She probably should have thought through their exit a bit more, but it was too late now. She swung the bow out in front of her. “I found it in one of the trunks upstairs.”

“Nice!” Dad said. “And you dressed up.”

“A little.” Ainsley glanced down at her Zander Alwyn T-shirt.

“Your dad and I used to do that when we were young. It made the festival even more fun.”

Ainsley relaxed a little. Her parents weren’t going to confiscate her weapon after all.

“You could come with us.” Tobin cast a sideways glance at Ainsley. “We could go and visit the sets and see if there have been any changes since you last visited. And if there have been… well, you might like to know about it.”

“I wish I could, but I’ve got to make a stop at the hardware store. I bought the wrong part to fix the dishwasher.” Dad stepped down from the ladder.

“We’ll come as soon as we get these repairs under control. Now, how about a sandwich before you go?” Mom asked, stirring in the mayo.

After a quick lunch, Ainsley and Tobin hustled out the door. Ainsley shivered, wishing she’d grabbed a sweater. A cold front must’ve blown in overnight from the mountains. She eyed the horizon. Purple mist mingled with the blue sky and white clouds.

At the festival, Ainsley gave the town square a once-over. Ruffled-looking shopkeepers swept up broken merchandise and a performer in a fairy costume ran a calming hand over a pink pony’s back.

Ainsley stopped at the ogre’s ax-throwing booth. “What happened?”

The ogre dusted off his counter. “A bunch of shops had their stuff knocked over and dug through, but mine was barely touched. I figure somebody was looking for cash or pricey merchandise they could flip. But they won’t get me down. I’ve made more money today than the rest of the week combined. Crowds have been flooding in to see the makeover at Shadowmire.”

“What makeover?” Ainsley asked.

“State-of-the-art special effects, new creepy cast members, that sort of thing. Had to cost a fortune.”

Ainsley exchanged a look with Tobin.
